Kriyayoga Meditation in the Modern Era

Kriyayoga meditation was revived in the modern era by Lahiri Mahasaya in India in 1861. A Yogavatar (incarnation of Yoga), disciples came to his home in Varanasi (Benares), where he instructed them in this ancient spiritual science, imparted to him by Mahavatar Babaji. Among his disciples was Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri, an incarnation of wisdom, who wrote the classic spiritual text Holy Science. This text reveals the unity that underlies eastern and western religions. He was the Guru of Paramahansa Yogananda, author of the spiritual classic Autobiography of a Yogi.

Paramahansa Yogananda’s great mission was to spread Kriyayoga meditation in the west. In 1925, he established the headquarters of the Self-Realization Fellowship in Los Angeles which still exists today, and operates hundreds of centres around the world dedicated to the teaching and practice of Kriyayoga meditation.

Kriyayoga Fellowship, under the guidance of Swami Shree Yogi Satyam, offers the same teachings as those first brought to North America by Paramahansa Yogananda and honours his final wish that Kriyayoga meditation continue to spread in India and throughout the world.

Kriyayoga Meditation Today

Today KYM is practiced worldwide by thousands in both the East and West and in countries as diverse as China, Portugal, Russia and Iran.

Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad), India is the home of a vibrant community of Kriyayoga meditators. Founded by spiritual Master Swami Shree Yogi Satyam, the Kriyayoga Ashram and Research Institute (KARI) welcomes people from the world over to study and practice Kriyayoga meditation in a residential setting.

KARI is located along the sacred Ganges River. People can stay in one of the residence buildings and attend the twice daily classes to learn Kriyayoga Meditation and deepen their practice.

Swami Shree Yogi Satyam

Swami Shree Yogi Satyam, is a graduate biologist and a former medical student. Within two years of his medical training, he realized the truth that Kriyayoga meditation is the highest form of worship of God and devoted his life to Kriyayoga meditation.

Swami Shree Yogi Satyam’s ultimate goal is to introduce Kriyayoga meditation to the general public in a way that makes this spiritual science easily accessible to all. He has taught thousands of people all over the world this ancient science of the rishis, which has allowed practitioners to uplift and rejuvenate the human body, mind and spirit.

Swami Shree Yogi Satyam has worked tirelessly to spread Kriyayoga meditation with a special focus on bringing this healing practice to the impoverished villagers of India. He conducts free Kriyayoga meditation services and retreats that are open to all without discrimination.

In addition to presiding over KARI, Swami Shree Yogi Satyam is also the spiritual head of Kriyayoga Fellowship and Yog Fellowship Temple located in Kitchener, Ontario.

Each institution under his spiritual guidance exists to serve humanity and propagate the teachings of Kriyayoga Meditation.

The Sacred Banyan Tree

In Autobiography of a Yogi, Paramahansa Yogananda describes a meeting that took place in 1894 in Prayagraj, India under a sacred banyan tree where Mahavatar Babaji instructed Shree Yukteswar on the importance of Kriyayoga Meditation. He prophesied the future worldwide spread of Kriyayoga for the benefit of humanity.

This same sacred Banyan tree is located on the premises of KARI and is a site of pilgrimage for many spiritual seekers.

The Seven Chakras Kriyayoga Temple

Also located on the premises of KARI is a temple built in the early 20th century by disciples of Swami Shree Yukteswar Giri as an expression of their deep devotion and love for him. This temple was built in the shape of a head and spine as a visual representation of the spiritual altar of God that exists within each of us.

Each year, many people from around the world visit KARI seeking answers, returning home with much more than they ever anticipated – a deeper, truer sense of their life purpose.
